The 5th Annual Drive Through Bethlehem was held December 9, 10, 11, 2011 (Fri. - Sun.) from 6 pm - 8 pm Bethany Baptist Church, 608 Ga. Hwy. 26 East, Cochran, Georgia. Photo Gallery 2008 Newspaper Article This FREE, 3-night, annual Christmas event is a fun and effective way to witness to our community. The Drive Through Bethlehem is a community-wide event that brings the Bethany congregation outdoors into the winter nights. A cast including animals, blacksmiths, Roman soldiers and craftspeople transport you to that miraculous night where ancient Bethlehem could be experienced without leaving the comfort of your car. In 2011 for the first time - Radio Station 96.7 FM presented a special Bethlehem Broadcast during "Drive Through". This event is free and open to the public, hosted by the Bethany Baptist Church Members. Teach your children there's more to the Christmas holiday than the mall. The True Story At that time, Caesar Augustus decreed that a census be taken, and every person in the entire Roman world had to go to his own town to register. Many people traveled to Bethlehem for the census and all the houses and the inn were full. Joseph, being of the line of David, was required to go to Bethlehem to register with Mary, who was pledged to be his wife and was expecting a child. When Mary and Joseph arrived, there was no room at the inn. The Virgin Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son, in a crude, little stable where the animals were kept behind the inn. "Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." All too often, the real meaning of Christmas gets lost or blurred in all the flurry of shopping, travelling, and holiday. We must remember that there is a reason the name "Christ" is in the word Christmas and it doesn't have a thing to do with a "winter festival". "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."            Absolute faith is not a requirement in our church. An open heart is. Come join us as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The dates and time can easily be changed so the signs may be used year after year. Bethany Baptist Church would like to invite the community to join us as we celebrate the Christmas Season by visiting our Drive Through Bethlehem program. We want you to experience the sights, sounds and feel of ancient Bethlehem as it would have appeared on the night of Jesus’ birth. The Drive Through Bethlehem will be presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 6 pm to 8 pm nightly. This event is FREE to the public, and we would also like to invite your church groups to bring a van load (buses are too big to pass through the “gates of Bethlehem ”. This event will be a great outing for children, families and even senior adults due to the fact that there is no walking involved. Participants will ride through the “streets of Bethlehem ” in their vehicles so even cold temperatures should not be a deterrent. Bethlehem is re-created in the church yard of Bethany Baptist Church located at 608 Georgia Highway 26 East (Dublin Highway) in Cochran, Georgia. Vehicles will be directed to line up across the street at Bleckley Middle School and drive slowly through with headlights turned off. Our Church members will be dressed in costumes and will take their places as shepherds, angels, shopkeepers, Roman soldiers, Mary and Joseph. One of the unique features of our Drive Through Bethlehem is the presence of many live animals. We will have sheep, goats, horses, etc. There is No Admission, and you can see it all without leaving the comfort of your car! Our purpose in presenting the Drive Through is to help focus the attention of our community back to the real reason for the season – the birth of our Savior.
